POS and POS systems explained

The term point of sale is used to describe a variety of things. It can be of the cash in a store or a place where transactions occur. Most often, the term refers to a cash register. The abbreviation commonly used for point of sale POS. Each letter of the abbreviation is pronounced separately (eg POS) compared to pronounce the acronym himself (Legs, for example).

When computers were first invented, large retailers have been the first to implement the POS system to help automate many tasks to operate a retail store. These computers were very large and expensive. This has limited the adoption of POS systems to major retailers such as grocery chains. The introduction of low-cost personal computers in the 1980s led to retail stores of all sizes to improve efficiency with the help of POS systems.

A common point of sale system includes a computer, cash drawer, receipt printer, pole display, barcode scanner, card reader magnetic swipe, a modem and point of sale software. Each room offers the following features:

  • Personal computer – Operations software point of sale and provides interfaces to hardware devices such as printers, card readers, credit and so on.
  • Till – A lock box that stores cash and is triggered to open the cash register software.
  • Printer to receive – Prints a hard copy of the sales transaction for the client.
  • Pole Display – display LED is facing the customer and shows each item and price scanning.
  • Bar Code Scanner – A type of laser device (style rifle freestyle) when he tripped on a bar code, lines of bar code converted to numbers. This number or SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is then transmitted to the computer SOP for the automatic price.
  • Magnetic Swipe Reader – Reads the Magnetic strip on the back of a credit card. Information stored on magnetic tape includes credit card number, expiration date, customer name, and address. The information is transmitted a network of processing credit card through the POS system for payment of the goods.
  • Modem – Allows POS 's computer to communicate with the processing centers credit card and other parts of the chain.
  • Point of Sale Software – Software that runs on the computer, the various control devices, and performs the traditional functions of the cash register sounds like a sale.

Today at the point of sale software contains many more features beyond the cash register. Therefore, the term POS system is gradually replaced by the phrase Retail Management System. POS is now commonly known as the function of cash register in a system of management in retail.

When systems of outlets have been introduced, their only function was to ring the sales department codes. This automation has allowed retailers to see their simple daily sales summarized by department. The automation has saved many hours a retailer in determining which departments and sections contained selling and how many dollars of sales were generated. Once the computers were put in place, the rapid evolution of systems today's sophisticated retail management began.

The next step in the evolution of point of sale was adding an automatic pricing. Rather than enter a department code and then the price of an item, cashiers can now enter the SKU (Stocking Keeping Unit) of the element and point of sale would recover the money. Pricing automatic save money retailers by eliminating the need to put a price tag on each physical point and reducing pricing errors made by cashiers.

From the point of sale system is now held an individual record for each inventory item, the retailers want to maintain their levels of storage in the computer. This ushered in the era of the perpetual inventory in real time. By placing a bar code that represents the SKU of each item in stock, the amount of hand on stocks has been automatically reduced each time it was scanned at point of sale. This feature has allowed retailers to examine their point of sale systems for the scales of the update at any time.

Once the stock levels of inventory and retail prices were managed by the POS system, the next logical step was to add modules to purchase and receipt to complete the loop inventory management. This closed loop automation inventory allowed a retailer to:

  1. issuing purchase orders to buy Property
  2. Create inventory and references via the order
  3. Receive goods against the purchase order
  4. Stock levels are increased in hand function when receiving
  5. Print price tag with the code bars
  6. Selling goods through point of sale cash register
  7. Stock levels are exhausted hand from scans SKU
  8. Perpetual inventory is automatically updated
  9. Generate reports on sales, inventory levels, purchases, and receive
  10. Inventory management and purchasing behavior based on markdown sales trends

As you can see, the simple point of sale system has grown into a powerful information system for managers and owners of stores. Today systems point of sale continue to innovate and some even include:

  • integration of electronic commerce
  • Integrated Accounting
  • CRM – Customer Relationship Module
  • processing payments
  • Management Gift Cards
  • Service Order Management
  • Marketing
  • Revolving accounts receivable
  • counters customer traffic
  • Integrated CCTV
  • Open to Buy Planning
  • modeling stocks linear
  • managing special orders
  • EDI (Electronic Control)
  • And much more …

As management systems in retail continue to add more robust features, the point of term Sales continue to refer to an entire module within the entire system.
