Cost of living international rankings 1 April 2009
International cost of living rankings are the result of comparing the cost of a Budget expatriate staff, with local prices for the same increments of the same goods and services in each country around the world.
Our results show that the overall impact made multifaceted economic trends that affect each country in a manner or another, contribute to the speed of substantial changes in the cost of living in the country in the world. Changes in the relative cost of living are large and occurred in a relatively short period of time. The reason for this is because so many economic crises occur simultaneously. 2008 saw the bubble Tax break followed by the failure of a number of global fund asset management, insurance and banking giants. Some were liquidated or taken over others were bailed out by public funds. In 2009, we saw the continued decline in home prices that many believe still at its lowest level. The stock prices and indices are at levels last a decade or more ago. The downward trend in inflation and interest rates continues in the developed and developing markets. We are also aware of the volatility of exchange rates with a number of major economies to see their currencies weaken significantly last year. The economic impact continues to spread worldwide. We now see a truly global recession with reduced demand for manufacturing inputs and outputs as well as lower energy demand and large scale job losses.
This study of 276 world sites covered all countries of the world. The study includes the cost of several hundred points that expatriates generally spend their salary, divided into groups Basket 13. Results from 1 April 2009 were compared with results prior to December 1, 2008. The index uses New York as the base (New York = 100). An index above 100 means that the cost of living is higher in New York, an index below 100 means that the cost of living is lower in New York.
Geneva has a cost of living 110 example. This means that on average, goods and services that cost $ 100 in New York, cost $ 110 to Geneva. Each city is classified according their overall cost of living index that includes the cost of all groups basket.
A cost of living index increases or decreases as the local price of goods and services used in the study and the exchange rate in force. Typically, a country with a currency that has risen against the currencies of Other (currency appreciation) and has relatively high local inflation (fast / large price increases), the experience is generally an increase in the cost of living compared to other countries. On the other hand, a country with a currency that has fallen against the currencies of other (most weak currency) and has relatively low local inflation will generally experience a lower cost of living compared to other countries. It is important to note that we are talking about changes. Take London as another example. As recently as December 2008, London has consistently ranked the sixth most expensive place in the world for expatriates to live. In April 2009, it is the 23rd most expensive place in the world for expatriates. This does not mean that the cost of living for expatriates living in London has declined. What this means is that, compared to other places in the world, London is also more expensive than last year. What makes the cost of living in London relatively lower than it was primarily due to the rising cost of living elsewhere with the weaker British Pound.
These changes have a significant impact on expatriate employees. An expatriate working in a high cost of living – countries with strong currencies such as Hong Kong where the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the U.S. dollar illustrates this point. The high cost of living, it is difficult to record because of higher local prices, household (including accommodation services), in particular is very expensive. However, an expatriate working in Hong Kong will now probably sending money home gives you the power spending increased sharply in the house. In the past year, the Hong Kong dollar has risen 15% against the Malaysian ringgit, and 30% against the Indonesian rupiah and the Australian Dollar.
Top 10 most expensive places for expatriates to live
Tokyo has retained its city status the most expensive in the world for expatriates to live.
