Snort really doesn’t “scan” any PCs on the network. It sniffs the traffic off the network and then detects security events based on the rules that are installed. Snort is considered a network intrusion detection system (NIDS). There are also host based intrusion detections (HIDS). They are installed on the server or PC and basically check the integrity of the system. It can detect if a host has been compromised. Below are a couple of examples of how Snort works. As you can see Snort never has any communication with the host (PC or server) at all. It just inspects the packets from it.

Example:
An infected computer sends out port scans on a particular host. Snort would see the network traffic from that host and fire off an alert to notify you of the event.

Example 2:
A hacker tries to SQL inject a webserver you have open to the public. Snort will inspect the traffic headed towards the webserver and see that this is malicious traffic and then notify you.
